CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland State men's tennis team continued to set the tone in the Horizon League on Sunday, defeating Detroit 6-1 and improving to 2-0 in the conference.
The Vikings easily recovered from Saturday's doubles losses at Xavier, sweeping all three matches to win the point against Detroit. Orno and Ryan Hamning have now compiled an impressive 13-2 record at first doubles this spring.
Detroit, the newest addition to Horizon League men's tennis, picked up its only win of the day at No. 1 singles where Pjotrs Necajevs bested Phil Orno in three sets, 7-5, 6-7(4), 10-4.
Hamning, Rob West, and Yannick Goossens picked up their second singles wins of the weekend as Cleveland State swept the rest of the lineup in straight sets, including an exhibition win from Aris Spirtos.
"Detroit has a really great base of a team to start with, being brand new to the conference," CSU head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Both teams fought really hard, and it is always great to get a conference win. Our guys really focused well on the big points and we were able to convert when we needed to. With each match our confidence continues to grow, and that will only help us down the road."
The Viking men are now 12-5 overall this season. The team will have a week of practice before traveling to Green Bay on Sunday, April 5, for an 8:30 a.m. match
