Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Battles For 4-3 Win At Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's tennis team picked up its second straight 4-3 victory Saturday, earning the hard-fought win at Xavier. With the win, the Vikings are now 5-1 on the young season.

"The team is getting tougher every match we play, and it was great to see people step up today and close out a tough road weekend with another 4-3 victory," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Although we were down the doubles point and down a member of the singles lineup, the team never gave in and fought until the very end. I'm proud of their efforts this weekend, and I'm looking forward to what is ahead for this team"

After dropping the doubles point, the Vikings fell behind 2-0 after Xavier picked up a win at No. 6 singles, before Devin Boyer got Cleveland State on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 4 spot.

Lincoln Battle then knotted the match at 2-2 following a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles, before Xavier once again took the lead at 3-2 with a win at the top of the lineup.

The Vikings were able to tie the score once again at 3-3 with a 7-5, 7-5 win from Carl Gedlitschka at No. 5 singles, before Nico Jamison clinched the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 three-set victory at the No. 3 spot.

With their wins today, Battle and Gedlitschka remained perfect this spring, improving to 6-0 in singles play.

Next up for the Vikings will be a 2:00 p.m. match at Toledo on Friday, February 9.
