Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Continues Spring Slate At Dayton & Xavier

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will begin a four-match roadswing to continue its spring slate this weekend, traveling to Dayton on Friday, February 2 and Xavier on Saturday, February 3.  

Last Time Out…
The Vikings picked up a pair of 6-1 victories over Butler and Duquesne, improving to 3-1 on the year and remaining perfect when playing at home at 3-0 this spring.    

On The Road Again
This weekend's matches will mark the beginning of a four-match roadswing for the Vikings, as they will be playing away from home until the middle of the month. Cleveland State will be trying for its first road win of the season, and will be playing its second and third road matches of 13 scheduled contests away from home this year.  

Battle Named #HLTennis Singles Player of the Week
Earlier this week freshman Lincoln Battle was named the Horizon League Singles Player of the Week, picking up the honor for the second straight time. Battle went 2-0 last weekend, earning straight set wins at No. 2 singles against Butler and No. 1 singles against Duquesne.  

…Extends Undefeated Spring Campaign
With his two wins last weekend, Lincoln Battle remained perfect this spring, improving his singles record to 4-0 during dual match play. In addition to Battle, Carl Gedlitschka is also 4-0 this spring, as one of two Vikings with double-digit wins on the year – standing at 12-3 entering the weekend.  

Erler & Matyjas Pick Up #HLTennis Doubles Team of the Week Honors
For the second straight week the Vikings swept the #HLTennis weekly awards, as Mikael Erler and Alan Matyjas were named the Doubles Team of the Week. Erler and Matyjas teamed up for a 6-3 victory at the top of the lineup against Duquesne, helping the Vikings clinch the doubles point on the match. This marked the first time that the duo was playing as a doubles team this season.  

#HLTennis Preseason Poll
Earlier this month the Vikings were selected to finish first in the North Division of the Horizon League Preseason Poll, while also picking up a vote as the overall champion. This marked the 12th year that the Horizon League has released a preseason tennis poll, with Cleveland State being selected as a top-two team 11 out of the 12 years.

Head Coach Brian Etzkin
The Vikings will be under the direction of 22-year head coach Brian Etzkin. As the all-time winningest coach in program history, Etzkin continues the 2024 spring campaign with 312 career wins.
