Indianapolis, Ind. - For the second straight week the Cleveland State men's tennis team has been recognized by the Horizon League, as Lincoln Battle has been named the Singles Player of the Week while Mikael Erler and Alan Matyjas have earned Doubles Team of the Week honors. This marks the second time this season that Cleveland State has swept the weekly awards.
Last week, this trio helped Cleveland State to a pair of matching 6-1 victories over Butler and Duquesne, improving the Vikings to 3-1 overall this season and a perfect 3-0 mark at home.
Battle picks up Singles Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after going 2-0 against Butler and Duquesne, remaining perfect on the spring season at 4-0.
"Lincoln is improving from week-to-week, and you can see the fire in his eyes when he's on the court," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "He is appreciating competing again and helping us chase our team goals every time we are on the court."
Against Butler, Battle posted a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, while he followed that up with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win at the top of the singles lineup against Duquesne. So far this season, all four of Battle's wins have come as straight-set victories.
In doubles action, Erler and Matyjas teamed up at the No. 1 spot against Duquesne, helping the Vikings pick up the early doubles point on the match. The duo, who was playing as a tandem for the first time this season, earned a 6-3 victory over the Dukes, helping the Vikings capture the convincing 6-1 match victory.
"We have a lot of talented players on this team, and to see Mikael and Alan team up in the doubles lineup was a fun moment for the team. They did a great job of playing solid doubles and helping us get out to a quick start against Duquesne. I'm looking forward to more great matchups on the doubles court this season," added Etzkin.
