Mareschal-Hay Has Strong Showing At Milwaukee Tennis Classic

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Cleveland State men's tennis sophomore Maxime Mareschal-Hay wrapped up action at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Sunday, playing a doubles and singles match.

Mareschal-Hay, who is just the third Viking to earn an invitation to the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, finished the weekend with a 1-2 singles record and a 1-1 doubles record.

"This was an important weekend for Max to gain confidence in his game and learn that he can play at a high level and play against some of the best players in the country," assistant coach Rob Silver said. "It will be exciting to watch Max grow and improve throughout the season and see what he and the team can achieve."

After picking up a first round win against a Marquette tandem yesterday, Mareschal-Hay and San Diego's David Nordfeldt faced a VCU duo in the main draw doubles quarterfinals, dropping a 6-4 decision to one of the top doubles teams in the nation.

"I thought Max played well in doubles this weekend, especially considering that he had to partner up with somebody from a different team and try to learn their game in a short time frame. Despite never having played together, I thought they were able to put together two solid matches and have a good outing this weekend," Silver said.

Mareschal-Hay also played another singles consolation match Sunday, dropping a hard fought 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 three-set thriller to Vito Tonejc from DePaul – the 97th ranked singles player in the nation.

"Today's singles match was a phenomenal match between two players who battled the entire time. Max got off to a slow start, but really hit his stride in the second set, and then the third set could have gone either way but credit to Vito for hitting some big serves in key moments of the match," Silver said.

Mareschal-Hay and the Vikings will continue the fall campaign this weekend, taking part in the Bobby Bayliss Invitational hosted by Notre Dame, Friday, September 24 through Sunday, September 26.
