Cleveland State Men’s Tennis Sweeps #HLTennis Weekly Awards

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the fourth time this season the Cleveland State men's tennis team has swept the Horizon League weekly awards, as Matthew Terry has been named the Singles Player of the Week and Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay have been named the Doubles Team of the Week. This marks the sixth singles honor for Terry this season, while it is the second time that Terry and Mareschal-Hay are picking up doubles team accolades.

Last weekend, Terry and Mareschal-Hay helped the Vikings post back-to-back wins at IUPUI, capping off a perfect 8-0 #HLTennis regular season slate to capture the 2021 Horizon League Regular Season title. With the two wins against the Jaguars, Cleveland State is now 16-4 overall this season, and enters Horizon League Tournament play on a 13-match win streak – which is tied for the fourth longest active win streak among Division I teams.

In singles play, Terry picked up a pair of straight-set wins at IUPUI, posting a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot on Saturday and a 6-3, 6-4 win at the top of the lineup on Sunday. In Sunday's weekend finale against the Jaguars, Terry posted Cleveland State's clinching point, giving him a perfect 8-0 record against league opponents this year. For his career, Terry is now 19-2 in Horizon League regular season matches.

"Matt accomplished something that has most likely never been done in the league before – which is beat every team's No. 1 and No. 2 player in the same season – and it was great to see him complete the perfect 8-0 league record at IUPUI last weekend," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Matt has been a crucial part of our singles lineup this season, so it's great to see him get the recognition that he definitely deserves."

With his two wins against IUPUI, Terry is now 14-4 overall this year, and enters tournament play on a six-match win streak. His 2-0 record in the final series of the regular season also put him over the 90-win mark for his career, as he currently ranks third on the CSU Singles Wins List with 91 career victories.

In doubles, Terry and Mareschal-Hay posted back-to-back wins at No. 2 doubles, earning a 6-4 win at IUPUI in the first match and a 6-3 victory in the series finale. With the two wins, the duo is 10-4 on the season, including a team-best 6-1 record against league opponents.

"Matt and Max have turned into a team that we can count on every time we take the court, and they have definitely come a long way since the beginning of the season. They have been solid for us at the No. 2 spot during league play, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do during the tournament this weekend," Etzkin said.

Terry and Mareschal-Hay have been part of a strong doubles lineup for the Vikings this season, as they have captured the doubles point in 17 of their 20 matches, including in seven of eight league contests.
