Men’s Tennis Sweeps #HLTennis Weekly Awards

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the third time this season the Cleveland State men's tennis team has swept the Horizon League weekly awards, as Matthew Terry has been named the Singles Player of the Week and Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay have been named the Doubles Team of the Week. This marks the fifth singles honor for Terry this season, while it is the first time that Terry and Mareschal-Hay are picking up doubles team accolades.

Last time out, Terry and Mareschal-Hay helped the Vikings pick up a pair of wins over Northern Kentucky, improving to 14-4 overall this season and 6-0 in Horizon League play. The back-to-back wins over the Norse made Cleveland State the only remaining undefeated team in league play, while it also extended the Vikings' current win streak to 11 straight matches – marking a program record.

In singles play, Terry picked up a pair of straight-set wins against NKU, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot in the first match and a 7-5, 6-4 win at the top of the lineup in the weekend finale. The two wins kept him perfect in league play this year (6-0), while it put him at 12-4 overall this season.

"Matt is on a great run right now, he has beaten every #1 and #2 in the league during the same year, which is a hard feat to accomplish and something that might not have ever been done before," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "He is on a roll and definitely hitting his stride at the right moment, and I'm looking forward to him closing out the regular season strong and carrying his momentum into the tournament."

With his two wins against the Norse, Terry has now won four straight singles matches – and 10 of his last 11 – while he moved into sole possession of third place on the CSU Singles Wins List with 89 career victories.

In doubles, Terry and Mareschal-Hay posted back-to-back wins at No. 2 doubles, earning a 6-4 win against NKU in the first match and a 6-2 victory in the series finale. With the two wins, the duo is 8-4 on the season and tied for the team lead with a 4-1 record in league matches.

"Matt and Max have improved as a team tremendously during the year – they are playing better tactical doubles, communicating better and competing at a high level no matter the score or situation," Etzkin said. "They did a great job this weekend, and I was most impressed by their first win when they came back from down 0-3 and two breaks, but never gave in and stayed focused until the very end. Matt and Max are both a big part of our doubles success this year, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for them."

The duo helped the Vikings pick up the doubles point in both matches against the Norse, as Cleveland State has now earned the doubles point in 11 straight matches and 16 of its 18 contests this season.
