Vikings Have Strong First Day At Viking Invitational

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened play at the Viking Invitational Friday, with Matthew Terry and Luke Phillips advancing to the quarterfinals of the Main Singles Draw and the semifinals of the Main Doubles Draw.

The Vikings posted a perfect 4-0 record during the first round of the main singles draw, with Matthew Terry, Luke Phillips, Jack Santilli, and Clark Bilinovich all picking up wins in their first matches of the Viking Invitational. Terry and Phillips were also able to pick up wins in the second round, advancing to the quarterfinals of the main singles draw.

Terry posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Binghamton's Luke Karniewich in the first round, and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sebastian Quiros also of Binghamton in the second round.

Phillips earned his spot in the quarterfinals following a first round win over Wright State's Theo Bourghelle (6-1, 6-1) and a second round win over Anthony Kanam who was playing unattached (6-4, 6-1).

In other first round matches, Santilli picked up a 6-7(6), 6-3, 1-0(7) victory over Duquesne's Dominic Lea, while Bilinovich earned a 7-6(5), 6-1 victory over Wright State's William Morton.

Cleveland State's doubles team of Terry and Phillips went 2-0 on the first day of play to advance to the semifinals of the Viking Invitational. The duo earned a 6-1 win in their first round match, and followed that up with a 6-2 win in their second round match, with both wins coming over Binghamton.

Jack Santilli and Clark Bilinovich also represented the Vikings in the doubles draw, and despite dropping their first round main draw match, the duo was able to cruise to a 6-0 win in the first round of the doubles back draw.

Play at the Viking Invitational will continue tomorrow (Saturday, November 2) beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
