Terry Advances To ITA All-American Qualifying Draw

ITA ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP | UPDATED PRE-QUALIFYING DRAW | MAIN DRAW (will be posted when available)
Cleveland State junior Matthew Terry remained perfect on the season after picking up a pair of wins in the Pre-Qualifying Draw at the ITA All-American Championship Sunday, advancing to the Qualifying Draw with wins over opponents from Louisiana and Ohio State.

In the third round, Terry notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jamie Fraser (Louisiana), and then followed that up with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over OSU's Tim Seibert to improve to 8-0 this year. For his career, Terry now owns 61 wins – just the 12th Viking all-time with 60+ singles victories.

"Matt picked up two great wins today, including an efficient win his first match of the day and then following that up with a win over a very good Ohio State player to earn a spot in the next round. To win four matches against four quality opponents in 48 hours is a giant feat which is taxing on the body and the mind, and I'm proud of his efforts to earn his way into the qualifying draw. His goal heading into the weekend was to advance to the next round, so now I'm excited to see what we can do tomorrow," head coach Brian Etzkin said.

With his two victories on Sunday, Terry has earned one of 16 open spots in the Qualifying Draw, and will join teammate Nico Mostardi in Qualifying Draw first round matches tomorrow (Monday, October 7).

Luke Phillips was also in action Sunday, as he dropped a three-set decision to Old Dominion's Jannik Giesse (6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1)) in a pre-qualifying third round matchup. Phillips finished his first trip to the ITA All-American Championship with a 2-1 record, and stands at 5-2 this season.

"Luke had a great run this weekend, and played another great match today, he just came up short in a tight match against a quality opponent. He battled all weekend, and had some great energy on the court throughout all three rounds, and helped guide us to success over the last couple days here in Tulsa," Etzkin said.
