ITA ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP | UPDATED PRE-QUALIFYING DRAW
The Viking duo of Matthew Terry and Luke Phillips began play at the ITA All-American Championship Saturday, with both players advancing to the third round of play after picking up a pair of wins on the first day of action.
In the first round of play, Phillips cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rafa Gonzalez of San Diego State, while Terry earned a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Baylor's Christopher Frantzen.
During second round action, Terry posted another three-set victory, earning a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Arkansas' Jose Dominguz Alonso, while Phillips picked up a 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 win over Texas Tech's Franco Ribero.
"Luke had a solid win this morning, and then came back late tonight with a match to remember. After picking up a quick win in the first set, he dropped a hard fought second set and then lost four straight games in the third set before winning five straight games to bring himself back in the match. He did a great job of blocking out what happened earlier on in the match, and battled for the third set tiebreak win, earning a spot in third round action tomorrow," head coach Brian Etzkin said.
With his two wins on Saturday, Terry improved to 6-0 this season, and has 59 career singles wins – just one win shy of becoming the 12th Viking all-time with 60+ victories.
"Matt did a great job today, he came out slow in both matches, but was able to overcome the slow starts and beat two really good players. He had confidence in himself and his game in both matches today, and he did a great job of adjusting during the match to pick up two quality wins," Etzkin said.
Terry is slated for a pre-qualifying third round contest against Louisiana's Jamie Fraser at 9:00 a.m. EST tomorrow (Sunday, October 6), with Phillips set to go up against Jannik Giesse of Old Dominion at a time to be determined.

Cleveland State also continued play at the Purdue Fall Invitational Saturday, with Raul Teichmann and Jack Santilli both picking up singles wins.
Teichmann picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Dayton's Will Harper, while Santilli earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Michael Lee of Xavier. Both wins marked the first of the 2019 fall campaign for the duo.
