Terry & Mostardi Lead CSU On Day Two Of Notre Dame Invite

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team continued play at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational Saturday, led by Matthew Terry and Nico Mostardi who both posted 2-0 singles records on the day.

"We were able to have another competitive day on the courts today, and we have been playing some good tennis through the first couple days of the fall season," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I think every match has been competitive for us, and every match has featured two players that are even in skill level which makes for some entertaining matches early on in the fall season."

Matthew Terry and Nico Mostardi both went 2-0 on the day, Terry improving to 3-0 in singles play on the young season, and Mostardi picking up his first wins of his senior campaign.

Terry picked up wins against Marquette's Luis Heredia (6-2, 6-3) and Denver's Matt Summers (6-4, 3-6, 1-0(6)), while Mostardi's wins came over Nebraska's Will Gleason (6-3, 6-3) and Illinois' Alex Bancila (6-4, 6-3).

With his two wins, Mostardi moved into eighth place on the CSU Singles Wins List, and currently has 72 career victories.

"Matt has been playing some great tennis over the last two days, and he was able to show his mental toughness when he won a great tiebreaker in his match against Denver. Nico was able to turn some momentum his way today, and hopefully he will use this as a catapult to the start of his senior season," Etzkin said.

Luke Phillips picked up Cleveland State's other singles win on the day, as he went 1-1 in his matches, including a 6-4, 7-6(9) victory over Stefan Dragovic of Marquette.

Phillips is now just one win shy of recording his 50th career victory, entering tomorrow's final round of singles with 49 career wins.

The Vikings will close out the Bobby Bayliss Invitational tomorrow (Sunday, September 22), with one round of doubles and one round of singles.
