CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened play at the third annual Viking Invitational Friday, having a successful day in doubles and singles action.

In the doubles draw, the Cleveland State tandems of Nico Mostardi and Benjamin Slade and Luke Phillips and William Malm advanced to the quarterfinals, as Mostardi and Slade earned a 7-6(1) victory over Northern Illinois and Phillips and Malm went 2-0 on the day. In their first round match, Phillips and Malm picked up a 6-3 victory against Binghamton, and followed that up with a 6-2 victory over a Butler duo that entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed.
The Vikings also had three players advance in the main singles draw, with Luke Phillips, Benjamin Slade and Nico Mostardi all earning a spot in the third round. Phillips picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Anthony Kanam who was playing unattached, while Slade earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Wright State's Javier De La Villa, and Mostardi posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Butler's Ryan Roegner.
Mostardi's victory marked his 50th singles win of his career, as he became the 14th Viking all-time to reach 50 career victories. Mostardi is the second current Viking to reach the milestone, joining Slade who ranks eighth on the CSU Singles Wins List with 66 career wins.
Clark Bilinovich and Raul Teichmann also picked up main draw singles wins on the day, earning victories in the first round before falling in their second round matchups. Bilinovich posted a 6-1, 6-7(4), 1-0(8) victory over Binghamton's Tiago Lourenco, while Teichmann earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Inigo Saez of Binghamton.
Cleveland State's final singles win on the day came from Malm, as he earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wright State's Leighton Brandon in the singles backdraw.
Action at the Viking Invitational will begin tomorrow, with doubles action beginning at 9:00 a.m.
