SOUTH BEND, Ind. – For the second straight year, Cleveland State men's tennis sophomore Matthew Terry has advanced to the Round of 16 in the Main Singles Draw at the ITA Midwest Regional.
UPDATED DRAWS | MAIN SINGLES
"We had a good day today, picking up some quality wins in a tough regional field," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Nico was able to get a great win in the first round, and had a solid second round match that came down to a few points not going our way. Matt pulled out both of his wins after losing tough first sets, as he was able to work his way back into the matches and focus on his game. He really focused on turning around both of his matches, and heads into tomorrow with a lot of momentum."
Terry earned back-to-back three-set victories in his first two matches of the main draw Saturday, earning a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory against Toledo's Vince Anzalone in the opening round and a 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 win against Northwestern's Dominik Stary in the second round.
Entering the ITA Midwest Regional, Stary was ranked 86th nationally, marking the first victory for Terry against a ranked opponent during his college career.
Nico Mostardi went 1-1 on the day, earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Keenan Mayo from Illinois in the first round, before falling in a 7-5, 7-6(2) decision to Notre Dame's Tristan McCormick in the second round.
Benjamin Slade and Luke Phillips bowed out in the first round of the Main Singles Draw, Slade dropping a 6-1, 6-2 contest to Ohio State's Alex Kobelt, and Phillips falling in a 6-2, 6-4 contest against Illinois' Caleb Chakravarthi.
Slade finished with a 3-1 record on the weekend after earning a spot in the Main Singles Draw for the first time in his career.
Terry will continue play at the ITA Midwest Regional tomorrow (Sunday, October 21), with two rounds of Main Draw Singles play slated.
