Vikings Have Strong First Day At UT Rocket Invite

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team had a strong first day at the UT Rocket Invite Saturday, as the Vikings posted six singles wins and four doubles victories.

"Overall this was a good day for us, our goal was to win more matches than we lost against each team no matter what the format was – treating it like a team event – and we were able to do that. I am excited about the outcome of today's action and I thought we played some solid tennis," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "To start the day we came out with good intensity and good focus against Toledo, playing some good doubles and we had strong singles play from Mirko and Andre."

To start the day, Cleveland State picked up three singles wins and a doubles victory against Toledo, led by Andre Mick who posted a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory against Reid Teatsorth. Mirko Radosevic and William Malm also picked up singles wins against the Rockets – Radosevic as a 2-6, 7-5, 10-4 decision and Malm as a 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 decision. The doubles team of Benjamin Slade and Kevin Goth posted a 6-3, 6-1 win in the lone doubles match against Toledo.

"Against Chicago State we were definitely favored on paper, but I thought Chicago State really battled and made us work for all of our wins. I thought the highlight of this match was Benjamin Slade, who controlled play throughout his match, picking up an easy straight-set win," Etzkin said.

In their second match of the day, the Vikings picked up a pair of doubles wins and a singles victory from Slade. Slade's singles win came as a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Chicago State's Felix Savard, while Joe VanMeter/ Mick (6-3, 7-6 (4)) and Radosevic/Malm (6-1, 4-6, 10-7) notched CSU's doubles wins.

"During the final match of the day I thought Andre and Joe looked really good in doubles action, while Mirko played some good singles. Mirko was up a set when he got injured, but was able to tough it out and pick up a hard-fought win by fighting through and finding a way. Ben also had a good singles match in the finale, as he was down 5-1 in the tiebreaker, but came back to win 16-14," Etzkin said.

In the Saturday finale, the Vikings picked up two more singles wins and a doubles victory. The doubles team of VanMeter and Mick picked up their second win of the day, posting a 7-5, 6-2 victory against a Purdue tandem. CSU's singles wins came from Radosevic (6-1, 6-7, 10-7) and Slade (6-4, 4-6, 16-14).

The Vikings will close out play at the UT Rocket Invitational tomorrow (Sunday, October 10), facing Youngstown State at 8:30 a.m. (UT Outdoor Courts) and Wayne State at 11:30 a.m. (Shadow Valley/Maumee).
