KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team wrapped up play at the WMU/Vredevelt Invitational Saturday, with the doubles team of William Malm and Joe VanMeter winning the A Doubles Consolation bracket.
"Overall I really enjoyed this tournament this weekend, it had some good teams in attendance and it was a friendly, but competitive atmosphere. It was a great experience for all of our players, and I thought that tennis was the real winner at this tournament," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "The team competed well today, and we were able to pick up some wins and improved our doubles play from yesterday. William and Joe played some good doubles for us, picking up two wins, and had a good tournament overall."
After dropping their opening round match yesterday, Malm and VanMeter bounced back with a pair of wins today to capture the A Doubles consolation title. Their first win came as a 7-5 decision over a Green Bay duo, while their championship victory came over an Illinois State tandem as a 6-3 decision.
The Viking duo of Benjamin Slade and Mirko Radosevic also picked up a doubles win Saturday, earning a 7-5 victory over a Western Michigan duo in Flight D action.
Cleveland State also picked up a singles win on the final day of the WMU/Vredevelt Invitational, with Radosevic earning a 6-4, 6-7, 10-5 victory against Green Bay's Jan Leithner in Flight G.
"We had one finalist in Andre Mick today, who played well in defeat, pushing his opponent throughout the match but just didn't quite get it. He played well all weekend and really brought the energy to his matches. We will now look ahead to the tournament at Toledo in a couple weeks and taking another step forward this season," Etzkin said.
Cleveland State will now take a week off from competition, returning to the courts on Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10 at the UT Rocket Invitational.
