Vikings Extend Winstreak With 4-3 Victory At Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team extended its winstreak to seven straight matches Friday afternoon, capturing a 4-3 victory over Duquesne. The Vikings are now 12-5 overall this spring.

"This was a great comeback win for us today, the entire team showed a lot of fight and focused on the job at hand," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "We played a good doubles point to get out to the early lead, which proved to be critical today. Joe and Jorg both coming back from a set down was awesome to watch and really energized the team. Mirko also had a great singles win for us, playing with a lot of heart and focus, which is great to see coming from a freshman. Hopefully we will be able to carry over this momentum into tomorrow's contest at Youngstown State and come away with another victory."

The Vikings got out to an early 1-0 lead after picking up the doubles point, with victories at the No. 2 and No. 1 spots. At No. 2 doubles Manuel Bellutti and Mirko Radosevic earned an 8-5 victory, while Ali Shabib and Nolan Marks battled for an 8-7 (8) victory at the top of the doubles lineup.

Despite having the momentum on Cleveland State's side entering singles play, Duquesne was able to pick up two quick points, earning wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Duquesne then gained a 3-1 advantage with a win at the No. 6 spot, putting the pressure on the Vikings to win the final three matches on the court.

Joe VanMeter picked up CSU's first singles victory of the match, putting the score at 3-2 with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. VanMeter now has an 18-11 overall singles record this season, including an 11-6 mark this spring.

Radosevic then evened the match at 3-3 following a victory at No. 4 singles – his third straight singles win. Radosevic posted a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 three-set victory, improving his singles record to 10-6 this spring.

The final point came down to No. 1 singles, between Jorg van der Vloet and Duquesne's Rich Robbie. After dropping the first set, van der Vloet battled for a comeback victory, coming out on top in a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 decision.

The Vikings will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, April 4), traveling to Youngstown State for a Horizon League contest at 5:00 p.m. Live Stats for tomorrow's contest against the Penguins will be available on CSUVikings.com.
