Men’s Tennis Picks Up Third Straight Win At IPFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team picked up its third straight win Sunday afternoon, defeating IPFW 5-2 in non-league action. The Vikings improved their overall record to 8-5 this spring.

"I thought we beat a talented team in IPFW today, and it definitely feels good to go 2-0 on the weekend, including a victory in league play," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We were able to win a good doubles point again today and were able to play with the lead which is helpful no matter what is happening in the match. The doubles point was key today I thought, and really allowed us to play with confidence during singles action."

Cleveland State was able to get out to an early 1-0 lead for the third straight match, picking up the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 team of Manuel Bellutti and Mirko Radosevic picked up a quick 6-3 victory, while the No. 3 duo of Jorg van der Vloet and Joe VanMeter had to battle for a 7-5 victory in their match.

The Vikings were then able to win four of the six singles matches to come away with the 5-2 victory.

Playing on just four courts, the top four singles matches were in action first, with van der Vloet capturing the first singles victory on the day at the No. 2 spot. van der Vloet improved his spring singles record to a team-best 10-3 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against his opponent.

VanMeter and Bellutti then both picked up their team-leading 16th singles wins of the seasons at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, to clinch the match for the Vikings. VanMeter posted a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at the top singles spot, while Bellutti earned a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot.

Ali Shabib picked up Cleveland State's fourth and final singles win on the day, evening his overall record to 12-12 with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.

IPFW was then able to pick up back-to-back wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots.

The Vikings will now return home for three matches next weekend, hosting Detroit at Chagrin Valley Athletic Club on Friday, March 27 and Case Western and Oberlin at Paramount Tennis Club on Sunday, March 29.
