VanMeter Notches 50th Win As Vikings Sweep Niagara

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team got back on the winning track Friday evening, posting a 7-0 sweep over the Niagara Purple Eagles. The sweep, which was their second of the season, improves their season record to 5-3.

"Overall this was a solid match for us today, we were able to play some solid doubles to get off to a quick start and then close out the match with strong performances in singles," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I'm proud of the way the team played and fought through some tough moments to pick up the win. There were a lot of close first sets in singles, but we were disciplined and composed and were able to close out all of the close moments."

The Vikings got out to an early 1-0 lead after picking up three wins during doubles action. The No. 1 team of Ali Shabib and Nolan Marks picked up 7-6 (5) victory, while Manuel Bellutti and Mirko Radosevic picked up a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot, and the No. 3 team of Joe VanMeter and Colton Buffington posted a 7-6 (3) victory.

Cleveland State then swept the singles matches, picking up straight set victories at every spot except No. 2 singles.

VanMeter, who was once again playing at the top of the lineup for Cleveland State, became the 11th Viking all-time to notch 50 career singles wins as he posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot. The win also gives VanMeter a team-best 14-6 singles record this season, and a 7-1 mark this spring.

Jorg van der Vloet kept his singles record perfect this spring, picking up a 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 come-from-behind victory at No. 2 singles. van der Vloet now has a perfect 8-0 mark this spring, and owns a 10-7 singles record overall this season.

Shabib was able to get back in the win column Friday evening, picking up a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles, while Bellutti posted a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot.

Buffington and Radosevic posted matching 6-2, 6-0 victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, closing out the sweep for the Vikings.

The Vikings will now take a break from competition, returning to action on the annual Spring Break Trip. This year's trip will take the Vikings to Hawaii, where they will play three matches over a five-day span.
