van der Vloet Posts 50th Win As Vikings Sweep St. Bonaventure

CLEVELAND, Ohio – After dropping its first match of the spring season yesterday, the Cleveland State men's tennis team rebounded Sunday afternoon, picking up a 7-0 sweep over St. Bonaventure. The Vikings are now 4-1 this spring.

Sunday's contest was the first sweep of the season for the Vikings, while it also gave CSU its best start to the spring season since 2009-10.

"We were able to take care of the doubles points early today, getting out to two big leads at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, and getting the pressure off ourselves after picking up the 1-0 lead," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We were then able to pick up every first set in singles, and play from ahead on all courts. St. Bonaventure is always a team that is very competitive and they always put up a good fight. I was pleased to see that we didn't give up any sets this year and we were able to keep a clean match. The guys did a good job of turning their game faces on when they stepped on the court for the first point and continued this throughout the entire match."

Cleveland State was able to take an early 1-0 lead after picking up the doubles point – getting wins at the No. 2 spot from Manuel Bellutti and Mirko Radosevic and the No. 3 spot from Joe VanMeter and Nolan Marks.

Colton Buffington quickly put the Vikings up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles, while Ali Shabib gave the Vikings a 3-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.

The clinching point came from Jorg van der Vloet at No. 3 singles, as he notched his 50th career singles win in a 6-2, 7-5 decision. van der Vloet, who owns a perfect 5-0 record this spring, became the 10th Viking all-time to record 50 singles wins on their career.

Radosevic then won his second straight singles match at the No. 5 spot, earning a 6-0, 6-4 victory, followed by a 6-4, 6-4 victory from VanMeter at the top of the singles lineup. VanMeter also owns a perfect 5-0 record this spring, while he has a team-best 12-5 overall singles record.

Cleveland State's final point came from Marks at No. 6 singles, as he earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory playing in his first singles match of the spring season.

The Vikings are scheduled to play Penn State and Georgetown next weekend, but due to a variety of circumstances the schedule may be altered. Make sure to check CSUVikings.com for updates as they are available.
