KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team wrapped up action at the Western Michigan Invitational Sunday, with Manuel Bellutti capturing the Flight E Singles title.
"Manuel played a solid match today to claim the title, after playing some good tennis all weekend long. He was really fired up to earn a spot in the championship match, and even more so to get the title," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Along with Manuel, Joe and Andre won their consolation finals – making this an overall good day for the Vikings. Joe played at a high level today, picking up a win against an opponent he lost to last year, while Andre continued to play better tennis and pick up his win."
With his victory today, Bellutti finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 singles record. In his championship match, Bellutti posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Michael Dube of Michigan State, picking up Cleveland State's second title of the weekend.
Joe VanMeter and Andre Mick both finished the weekend with a 2-1 singles record, capturing the consolation title in the B and G singles flights, respectively. VanMeter picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Notre Dame's Billy Pecor, while Mick earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brian Carman of Xavier.
Mirko Radosevic also picked up a win on the final day of the invitational, earning a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over Cristoffer Greve of Illinois State in a consolation match.
"Mirko had some tight spots in his first set, but he stayed focused and worked his way out of them. He played decent tennis all weekend, and it was good for him to finally get a win," Etzkin said. "Overall we had a winning record on the weekend and I was very happy with that. Doubles was definitely the highlight for us this weekend, and if we continue to play at a high level in doubles and keep improving in singles, that will translate into wins when the dual match season comes around."
The Vikings will now take a week off from competition, returning to the courts on Saturday, October 11 when they take part in the UT Rocket Invitational.
