Final Draws

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team won two out of their three matches on the final day of the Purdue Fall Invitational, as Joe VanMeter and Kevin Goth brought home consolation finals in their respective singles flights.

"This wasn't exactly the finish we would have liked today, but coming away with two consolation singles titles at our first tournament of the year is a pretty good result," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "Overall I think we had a good first weekend, and I'm excited to see what is to come from this team."

Both, VanMeter and Goth finished the weekend with a 3-1 singles record, cruising through the backdraw after dropping their opening round matches at the Purdue Invite.

VanMeter won his consolation final in the Singles B Flight, earning a 7-5, 6-2 victory over University of Chicago's Nicolas Chua. Goth's consolation title came in the Singles E Flight, earning a walkover win in the final match against Marius Merz of Green Bay.

The doubles team of Ali Shabib and Colton Buffington also advanced to a championship match this weekend, earning a spot in the Doubles A Flight final. After winning three matches over the first two days, Shabib and Buffington lost their first match against Jeffrey Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt in the final round - falling to the Valparaiso team, 8-4.

The Vikings will continue the fall season next weekend, participating in the Western Michigan Invite. The three-day tournament will take place from Friday, September 26 through Sunday, September 28.
