Shabib & Buffington Advance To Championship Match In Doubles A Flight

Updated Draws

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team continued play at the Purdue Fall Invitational Saturday, with the doubles team of Ali Shabib and Colton Buffington advancing to the championship match of the Doubles A Flight, and Joe VanMeter and Kevin Goth advancing to the consolation championship of their respective flights.

"We had a lot of people step up today and play some good tennis, both in singles and doubles action," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "Ali and Colton are playing some really good doubles right now, and I am excited to watch them in the finals tomorrow – if they play like I know they can, they have a great chance at bringing home the title. Kevin and Mirko also played some good singles for us, and it's great to see the freshmen playing well this early in the season. With Mirko, he had to make a big come back to win his match against TTU which showed a lot of guts, determination, and competitiveness."

After picking up two wins yesterday, Shabib and Buffington continued their winning ways on Saturday, earning an 8-4 victory over a tandem from Tennessee Tech. The duo will now face a Valparaiso team in the championship match which is slated to begin at 11:15 a.m. tomorrow morning (Sunday, Sept. 21).

VanMeter and Goth both went 2-0 in singles action Saturday, VanMeter advancing to the consolation final of the Singles B Flight and Goth advancing to the consolation final in the Singles E Flight. Both players dropped their opening round matches yesterday, but rebounded during play today. VanMeter picked up wins against Deepak Sabada of Chicago (w/o) and Alex Alvaro of Eastern Kentucky (7-6 (4), 6-1), while Goth earned his wins against Jan-Willem Felizer of DePaul (6-3, 4-6, 11-9) and Billy Weldon of Butler (7-6 (5), 6-4).

Both singles consolation matches will begin at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Action at the Purdue Invitational will conclude tomorrow and fans are encouraged to follow Purdue Men's Tennis on Twitter (@PurdueMT) for match-by-match updates throughout the day.
