Bellutti Advances In Qualifying Bracket At Midwest Regional

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team began play at the ITA Midwest Regional Thursday, with Manuel Bellutti advancing to the third round of the Qualifying Singles Bracket.

"The highlight of today's action was definitely Manuel picking up two wins against league opponents, he picked up his play in each match today and it was great to see him pull out a come-from-behind win in his second match," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We were in control of all of our other matches today, but we let them get away from us in the end. Jorg's match was back and forth the entire time and joe was in control of the first two sets but couldn't close it out. It should be a good day tomorrow for us, we have a lot of people in action and hopefully we can pick up some more wins."

Bellutti picked up two wins on the first day of the regional tournament, and will now play a third round match tomorrow morning with the winner earning a spot in the Main Singles Draw. In his opening match Bellutti picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Rodrigo Campos of Youngstown State, and followed that up with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Rowan Isaaks of Green Bay.

The Vikings had three other players in action in the qualifying bracket – Jorg van der Vloet, Matt Ford and Joe VanMeter – all three dropping their first round matches.

The third round of the qualifying draw will begin at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, with Bellutti facing his third straight Horizon League opponent, Patryk Koscieiski of Detroit.

Following the qualifying action, the first round of the Main Singles Draw will begin at 12:15 p.m., followed by the first round of the Main Doubles Draw at 4:30 p.m. Ali Shabib and Matt Kuelker will be competing in the Main Singles Draw, while the Vikings have three teams in the doubles bracket – Shabib/VanMeter, van der Vloet/Ford and Kuelker/Bellutti.
