Thompson Named 'Swimmer of the Week' for Third Time This Season

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Cleveland State junior swimmer Berry Thompson has been named the Horizon League `Swimmer of the Week' for the third time this season after his efforts helped the Vikings defeat UIC on Saturday (Feb. 4). The league office made the announcement on Monday afternoon.

With three `Swimmer of the Week' titles, Thompson leads the league. It's also the fifth time this season that a Viking male swimmer has won the award - the most in the Horizon League.

"We're very pleased with the progress Berry Thompson has made this season," head coach Wally Morton said. "He continues to improve each time that he competes and will continue to work hard to reach his full potential. We're confident Berry will perform very well for us at the Horizon League Championships."

Thompson accounted for 24 team points in the 138-105 win that helped CSU improve to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in the Horizon League - including a perfect eight-for-eight at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

He won the 100 free with a time of 44.82 and took second in the 50 free when he touched in 20.70.

Thompson swam third on the victorious 400 free relay team (3:04.74) that beat UIC's top quartet by more than three seconds (3:07.78). His split was a 44.85 - the best on the team on Saturday.

Last year, Thompson won the weekly award on three separate occasions (Oct. 18, Oct. 26, Nov. 23).

After Saturday's win, the Vikings are idle from competition until the Horizon League Championships run from Feb. 22-25 in Brown Deer, Wis.
