COLUMBUS, Ohio - Cleveland State junior swimmers Berry Thompson and Justin Hill each competed in the Last Ditch Qualifying Meet, hosted by Ohio State, on Sunday (March 4). Both swimmers were attempting to shave time off their season-best times in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Division I Championships.

Hill swam a 20.24 in the 50 free and Thompson was clocked at 43.96 in the 100 free, just shy of automatic qualifying times. Hill swam a 20.30 at the Horizon League Championships last week and Thompson's time was just off the school-record 43.33 he earned at the league meet.

The NCAA "A" cut time is 19.35 seconds and the "B" cut time is 20.29. Thompson was already under the "B" cut time of 44.37 but came up short of the "A" cut time of 42.26.

"I want to congratulate Justin and Berry on a great season," head coach Wally Morton said. "Berry still has a chance to go to the toughest swim meet in the world: the NCAA Division I National Championships. Although they did not qualify with their times, Justin and Berry are each among the best sprinters in the nation. I give my compliments to coach April Woo and both of those kids on a great season and making tremendous progress throughout the season."

Hill and Thompson were standout members of the men's swimming and diving team that placed second at the Horizon League Championships last weekend in Brown Deer, Wis.
