Chicago, Ill - Jakub Dobies paced the Vikings setting a Cleveland State record in the 200 IM, as the men finished day two of the Horizon League Championships in third place with 271 points.
"We definitely had our ups and downs today and we are fortunate to be only seven points behind the leader," head coach Wally Morton said. "Just about everything that could go wrong for us today, did, but we bounced back with some great swims especially by Jakub and Deni. We still have two strong days ahead of us and we just need to stay focused and look forward."
Dobies was the lone winner for the Vikings tonight, winning the 200 IM in record setting fashion. His time of 1:49.09 not only set a CSU record but also set the conference record. His time also set an NCAA "B" cut, which would allow him to go to the NCAA Championships if not enough "A" cuts are set this season.
Dobies time in the 200 IM bested Warren Vickers who set the previous record of 1:49.79 in 2003.
Deni Gasparin placed fourth in the 200 IM, swimming his best time of the season, 1:51.55. Zvonimir Androic finished 16th in the event, finishing in 1:56.14, a personal best.
Four Vikings placed in the 50 free, with Stephen Grove leading the way in fourth place. Grove's time of 20.69 was his best time of the season. Mike Marsico (20.94) and Keith Everhart (20.99) finished 12th and 14th respectively, each recording their best times of the season. Justin Hill finished 10th for CSU, setting a personal best with a time of 20.92.
The 400 medley relay team of Todd Winchell, Jakub Dobies, Stephen Grove and Berry Thompson also set an NCAA "B" cut time, finishing second in 3:17.38, the best time of the year.
Pierre De Waal was the highest finisher for CSU in the 500 free, finishing sixth with a time of 4:35.91. Graham Thoresen finished eighth with a time of 4:41.08 and Alex Cohara finished 12th in 4:40.50.
The Vikings ended day two in third place (271) just seven points behind the leader, Milwaukee (278). UIC finished the day in second place (274), Wright State is fourth (225), Green Bay is fifth (208) and Valparaiso is sixth (78).
