Cleveland State Men's Swimming & Diving Claim 2023 Magnus Cup Championship

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State led from start to finish at the 2023 Magnus Cup Invitational as the Green and White put up 1,663 points. Xavier was the runner-up with 1,418 points and Gannon was third with 956 points.

James Wolf scored 230.05 points in platform diving, and Xander Austin was right behind with 157.30 points.

The Vikings claimed the second through fourth spots of the 1650-yard freestyle with Jake Taulbee (16:02.08), Tanner Beck (16:03.57), Quinn DeGraaf (16:11.65), and Vittorio Cappabianca (16.12.89).

In the 100-yard IM, Josh Merchbaker touched first in 50.99 and Aidan Florio was sixth with a time of 53.33.

Cleveland State grabbed three scoring spots in the 50-yard butterfly, Thomas Lundin (22.84) in third, Andrew Arslanian (22.95) in fourth, and Aidan Rush (24.26) in eighth.

Jackson Nester took the top spot in the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:45.40 and Beck claimed fourth with a 1:51.07. Dogukan Tombul won the B-final after touching in 1:48.51.

Paddy Johnston set a new Magnus Cup record time in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking a 43.61. His time is also the seventh fastest in program history. Daniel Lyngaas (45.21) was the runner-up, Kenny Thomas (45.62) was sixth, and Merchbaker (46.47) in tenth.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Tyler Schultze set a new program record and Magnus Cup record after finishing in 1:57.21 and Florio placed sixth with a 2:03.60.

James placed third in the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:51.43 and Lundin was fourth with a 1:52.64.

The Vikings capped off the meet by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay as Kenny Thomas, Lyngaas, Connor Green, and Johnston put up a time of 3:05.85.

Cleveland State starts the second half of the season in Granville, Ohio with a double dual against Denison and UIndy on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 1 p.m.
