Cleveland State Men's Swimming & Diving First After Day One of Magnus Cup

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State is first with 571 points after the first day of the 2023 Magnus Cup Invitational. The Vikings swept the four individual races, two relays, and claimed the lone diving event of the day.

Cleveland State leads the way with 571 points, Xavier is second with 401 points, and Gannon is third with 306 points.

The Vikings claimed the top two spots in 1m diving with James Wolf (271.40) and Xander Austin (265.15).

Cleveland State took the first, fourth, and tenth place spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The A-team of Paddy Johnston, Dogukan Tombul, Josh Merchbaker, and Kenny Thomas led the way with a time of 1:20.77.

In the 50-yard breaststroke, Tyler Schultze (25.21) took first, Michael Cucu (26.02) fifth, Blake Fry (26.16) seventh, Merchbaker (26.20) eighth, and Aidan Florio (26.53) twelfth.

The 500-yard freestyle featured Daniel Lyngaas (4:28.79) winning the event. Quinn DeGraaf (4:36.46) came in seventh, Jake Taulbee (4:37.48) in eighth, and Tanner Beck (4:37.57) in ninth. Vittorio Cappabianca (4:36.59) won the B-final of the event.

The Vikings claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard IM with Jackson Nester (1:47.86), Schultze (1:49.37), and Reno James (1:51.23). Thomas Lundin (1:54.56) claimed tenth, Aidan Florio (1:54.63) twelfth, Blake Fry (1:54.93) thirteenth, and Tanner Beck (1:57.34) nineteenth.  

Cleveland State registered a strong performance in the 50-yard freestyle as Johnston (20.16) took first, Merchbaker (20.44) second, Thomas (20.52) third, Tombul (20.58) fifth, and Connor Green (21.08) tenth. Lyngaas rounded out the event in fourteenth with a 21.17.

The Green and White capped off the evening with a first and fourth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. Johnston, Schultze, Lundin, and Thomas took home the victory with a time of 3:16.21.
