McGillivray Named Head Diving Coach for Cleveland State Swimming & Diving Programs

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Chalmers McGillivray has been named the Cleveland State University Head Diving Coach, as announced by men's and women's swimming head coach Hannah Burandt.

McGillivray has spent the past 15 years coaching various Michigan High School diving teams with stops at Ypsilanti Public Schools, Brother Rice HS, Detroit Country Day HS, Birmingham Public Schools, and Troy School District.

"We are entering a new era as #OneTeamOneFamily with Chalmers at the lead of our diving program," said head coach Hannah Burandt.  "Chalmers brings expertise, enthusiasm, and a deep understanding of how to provide a true transformational experience for our Gen Z student-athletes in life, the classroom, and in the pool! Chalmers is an incredible human being and his energy is truly infectious. I cannot wait to see his influence throughout our entire program and staff."

McGillivray was twice named the Michigan High School Diving Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2021. He coached four State Champions, four All-Americans, and was part of seven State Championship teams at Seaholm High School.

"I want to thank Coach Burandt for entrusting me with this opportunity to work with the great divers at Cleveland State," said McGillivray. "All summer long, I have had a Bruce Lee quote in my head which is "What you do not change, you also choose."

Along with his work at the high school level, McGillivray has also coached at the Legacy Diving Club since 2012. The nationally recognized diving club is based out of Oakland University and is part of the USA Diving Club for ages 6-18.

McGillivray continued, "I am so excited to be part of the CSU Swim & Dive family and want to help continue the tradition that has been set."

A native of Seaholm, Michigan, McGillivray dove for Eastern Michigan University for a season, placing sixth in 1-meter and tenth in 3-meter. In his lone season, he helped the Eagles win the 2003 MAC Championship.

"Chalmers was a great part of our program as he was a great teammate, and always worked hard to improve his diving skills", said Buck Smith, head coach of EMU and Legacy Diving. "Chalmers is a wonderful human being, and I know he will continue to do great things as a coach and mentor at Cleveland State."

McGillivray was an All-State and All-American diver for Seaholm High School in 2002.

McGillivray graduated from Eastern Michigan in 2007 with bachelor's degrees in political science and sociology.
