Cleveland State Swimming & Diving Opens Season at Miami

Setting the Scene
The Vikings open their 2021-22 campaign on Saturday at 3 p.m. with a dual at Miami (Ohio). 

The 2021-22 Schedule
Cleveland State returns to a normal schedule this season, featuring 12 events with six of them occurring at the Busbey Natatorium. 

Get to Know the Red Hawks
Miami's men open their season this evening at Kentucky while tomorrow's dual will mark the season debut for the women. The men are the reigning MAC Champions while the women are coming off a third-place finish.

All-Time Meeting Knowledge
These two schools last met in 2020 with the Red Hawks winning on both sides. The women's score was 223-77 and the men's was 162-136. 

Preseason Poll
The men were selected to finish second, while the women were picked fifth in the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Preseason Poll, as voted upon by league head coaches. The men received 42 points with a first-place vote, and the women garnered 26 points. Oakland was picked atop both polls. 

The Last Time Out
The Vikings concluded their condensed 2020-21 schedule at the Horizon League Championships in which the men took second and the women placed fifth. Bob Fick was named the Freshman of the Year. 

Horizon League Champion Returners

  • Matt Akers won the 1m dive with a final score of 321.20.
  • Bob Fick won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:46.39.
  • Timothy Kubacki won the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:49.80.

 

Olympic Trials
Cleveland State had a pair of athletes swim in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska this summer. Griffin Manning swam the 100 LC meter breaststroke, while Jackson Nester took part in the 200 LC meter backstroke.

Head Coach Hannah Burandt
Coach Burandt enters her third season as the head men's and women's swimming & diving coach. She has guided the men to three straight runner-up finishes and three top-five finishes on the women's side. Burandt has coached 14 All-Conference swimmers.
