Poletta Wins Twice at Shortened NIC

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior Dominic Poletta won a pair of individual events on his final day of collegiate competition as the Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams took part in a pair of postseason events Thursday.

Cleveland State was hosting the National Invitational Championship at its Robert F. Busbey Natatorium while CSU junior Matt Akers took part in the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships.

During the course of Thursday's finals session of the NIC, the Horizon League announced it was indefinitely suspending competitions in all league-sponsored sports effective Friday, March 13, due to the COVID-19 outbreak. As a result, the final two days of the National Invitational Championship were canceled.

Nevertheless, Poletta made the most of his final time in the water as a collegian.

Poletta began the night by winning the 50 butterfly in 21.14 seconds, a new meet record. Poletta then went on to claim the 50 freestyle in 19.91 seconds. Those first-place finishes are in addition to the 50 free and 100 butterfly titles he won at the 2020 Horizon League Championships.

Poletta was one of three Vikings to score in the men's 50 free. Senior Jack MacDonald took 13th (20.31) while junior Ryan Sedlak was 19th (20.61).

Junior Timothy Kubacki placed fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:27.08 after resetting a new personal best in prelims (4:26.88).

Junior Dominik Niedzialek took 12th in the 50 backstroke in 23.05 seconds. Sophomore Bob Lenart also scored in the 50 fly, taking 16th in 22.75 seconds, bettering his seed time by more than a full second.

MacDonald, Poletta, sophomore Jack Krusinski and Sedlak finished fourth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:20.68.

Kubacki, Krusinski, Lenart and Sedlak took ninth in the 400 medley relay in 3:21.88.

Junior Matt Akers finished in 23rd place in 3-meter diving at the NCAA Zone Championships. He scored 268.80 points as he finished five places higher than he did at the same event last season. Akers finished strong as he posted 52.5 points on each of his final two dives—a forward 2.5 somersault 1 twist pike and a reverse 1.5 somersault 3.5 twist free.

Akers was scheduled to compete in the 1-meter event Friday at NCAA Zones, but that was also canceled in light of recent developments with COVID-19.

Junior Lexie Kostelnik has the highest individual finish by a CSU woman on the day. She took 18th in the 500 freestyle in 5:01.40.

Classmate Alana Cartwright also added a top-30 showing on the day. She took 27th in the 50 breaststroke in 29.53 seconds.

The CSU men finished in sixth place in the NIC with 157 points while the Viking women tied for 31st with three points.
