Kubacki, Niedzialek & Poletta Win Titles on Day 3

ROCHESTER, Mich. – A trio of Viking men won individual titles as the Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams continued action on the third day of the Horizon League Championships Friday inside the Oakland Aquatic Center.

It was the second straight day that the Viking men posted three first-place finishes. CSU sits in second place in both the men's and women's team standings, with the men owning 447 points and the women posting 416 points.

Junior Timothy Kubacki won the 400 IM title in 3:50.53, finishing over two seconds ahead of the field. His time of 3:50.41 in prelims shattered a 10-year-old school record by 3.50 seconds and was more than a full second ahead of the NCAA B standard.

Kubacki's second individual title in as many nights made him the first Viking to sweep the IM events at a league championship in 25 years. His first-place finish Friday was the first by a Viking in the 400 IM since 2012.

Junior Alec Bowie (4:03.93), sophomore Austin Harper (4:05.80) and junior Josh Hodges all added top-15 finishes in the event for CSU with Harper's time being a new personal best.

Senior Dominic Poletta joined Kubacki in winning a second individual title in as many nights. He touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly in 46.55 seconds, an NCAA B cut time. He broke his personal best entering the day by over a second as he became the second-fastest performer in the event at CSU. Poletta, who was seeded 24th in the event entering the meet, dropped 4.70 seconds off his seed time in his winning swim.

Poletta's third career individual league title gave CSU the first-place trophy in the men's 100 fly for the seventh time in the past eight years.

Seniors Matthew Martin (47.96) and DJ Arslanian (48.42) finished fourth and seventh, respectively. Sophomore Bob Lenart also scored for CSU, placing 10th in 49.17, after posting a career best in prelims.

After coming close in previous seasons, junior Dominik Niedzialek joined the party in winning an individual title Friday. He won the 100 backstroke in 47.47 seconds, an NCAA B standard and a personal best by .70 seconds. His win came by the slimmest of margins as he out-touched his Oakland foe by .01 seconds after he had trailed in the race at the halfway point.

Niedzialek's first individual league title gave CSU its fifth men's 100 back title in the past eight seasons.

Martin took eighth in the event in 49.92 seconds after entering as the second-to-last seed as he dropped nearly five seconds from his seed time in prelims. Freshman Nathen Eberhardt also scored in the event, taking 13th in a personal-best 50.33 seconds.

Two CSU men placed among the top five in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Jack Krusinski was fourth in a personal-best 55.05 seconds. Senior Tyler Stevenson was fifth in 55.13 seconds after he posted a personal best in prelims.

Eberhardt led the way for CSU in the 200 freestyle, placing seventh in 1:39.95. Eberhardt, who was the only rookie among the top eight in the event, had reset his personal best by nearly two seconds in prelims.

Senior Jack MacDonald took 11th in the 200 free in 1:40.61, a new personal best. Lenart was 15th in 1:42.00 after he had posted a personal best in prelims.
