Men Win Three Titles, Women Move Up on Day 2

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Cleveland State University men's swimming & diving team won three of five events, one in school-record time, while the Viking women moved up two places as both programs competed in the second day of the Horizon League Championships Thursday inside the Oakland Aquatic Center.

Junior Timothy Kubacki and senior Dominic Poletta won individual titles while CSU's 200 freestyle relay squad won their event while posting a new school record.

The CSU men sit in second place with 241 points while the Viking women, who were in fourth after Wednesday's action, are now in second with 204 points.

Senior Dominic Poletta became the first male swimmer of the Championships to surpass an NCAA 'B' cut time with his victory in the 50 freestyle. He won the event in a personal-best 19.71 seconds, becoming the second-fastest performer in program history. In winning his second individual HL title, Poletta finished .20 seconds ahead of the runner-up, which was larger than the gap between second place and fifth place.

Four other Vikings scored in the event, three of whom reset personal bests on the day.

Senior Jack MacDonald was fifth in 20.10 seconds, well over a half-second ahead of his prior personal best. MacDonald moved into the all-time top-five in the event at CSU.

Junior Ryan Sedlak was seventh (20.42), senior DJ Arslanian was 11th (20.54) and senior Tyler Stevenson was 13th (20.73), with Sedlak and Stevenson tallying career bests on the day.

CSU's success in the 50 free foreshadowed what was to come in the 200 freestyle relay to close the evening.

Poletta, MacDonald, Arslanian and Sedlak brought home CSU's first league title in the event since 2013. The quartet finished in a school-record time of 1:19.32, surpassing the previous mark that had stood for nine years. MacDonald split 19.67 seconds to help CSU pull even at the halfway mark before Arslanian (19.84) and Sedlak (19.74) brought home the victory.

While the CSU sprint freestylers dominated the end of the night, junior Timothy Kubacki was the first Viking to win a title Thursday.

Kubacki claimed gold in the 200 IM in come-from-behind fashion. He won his first HL title by finishing in a personal-best 1:47.05. He trailed his Oakland counterpart with 50 yards to go, but split 25.96 on his freestyle leg to win the race in thrilling fashion by .06 seconds. In doing so, he became the first Viking to win a men's 200 IM league title in 10 years.

Sophomore Jack Krusinski and junior Josh Hodges also scored in the 200 IM for CSU.
