Vikings Open 2019-20 Season at Akron

AKRON, Ohio - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened their 2019-20 seasons Friday evening at the Akron Zips Classic at Ocasek Natatorium.

After the opening day of the two-day meet, the CSU men are in third place with 188 points while the Viking women are in fifth with 88 points. The competition was the first for the Vikings under new head coach Hannah Burandt.

A trio of CSU men posted top-five individual finishes Friday while also being a part of at least one of CSU's top-finishing relays.

Sophomore Jack Krusinski took runner-up honors in the 200 IM in 1:53.65, more than 2.5 seconds faster than his swim in last year's Akron Zips Classic. Junior Timothy Kubacki was seventh in 1:54.76.

Senior Dominic Poletta was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 21.17 seconds as he led four Vikings among the top 16. Seniors DJ Arslanian (21.34) and Jack MacDonald (21.47) finished in 10th and 14th while junior Ryan Sedlak (21.57) was 16th.

Junior Dominik Niedzialek took fifth in the 500 freestyle in 4:38.33.

Niedzialek, Krusinski, senior Matthew Martin and Poletta combined to place second in the 400 medley relay in 3:21.03. Niedzialek also led off CSU's third-place 800 free relay (6:55.58) and was followed by Kubacki, MacDonald and freshman Nathen Eberhardt.

Junior Lexie Kostelnik had a strong showing in the 500 freestyle to lead the CSU women. She took 12th in a strong field in 5:06.02, a time that was over seven seconds faster than when she swam the same event in last year's Zips Classic.

Freshman Rachel Contich (5:08.42), junior Sule van der Merwe (5:09.66) and junior Irena Weclawiak (5:14.93) also notched top-20 finishes in the 500 free.

Junior Shaw Barney was CSU's best finisher in the 200 IM as her time of 2:11.52 was over three seconds faster than in last year's meet. Sophomore Agnes Bahr was four places behind in 2:12.21.

Senior Madi Jaszcz was the Vikings' top finisher in the 50 free as she shaved over a half-second off of last year's Zips Classic finish with her time of 24.73 seconds. Classmate Gabriella Marinelli was two spots back in 24.87.

Kostelnik led off CSU's top-finishing 800 free relay team and was followed by freshmen Hannah Cooper and Abigail Ramey and Jaszcz. The quartet finished in 8:00.84.

Freshman Caroline Hughes led off CSU's top-finishing 400 medley relay squad and was followed by Sophia Davis, Contich and Weclawiak as they finished in 4:01.02.

Cleveland State will conclude action in the Akron Zips Classic Saturday with a total of 10 individual events and three relays split across two sessions.
