INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened action in the 2019 Horizon League Championships Wednesday inside IU Natatorium.

The CSU men and women combined for three second-place finishes and a third-place finish in relays while three Vikings placed among the top 11 in men's 3-meter diving.

The CSU men are in third place with 98 points while the women are tied for second with 66 points.

In the lone individual event of the day, sophomore Trevor Mahoney came through in a big way to start the meet. Seeded 16th entering the event, he scored a career-best to qualify for the final before resetting his career-best score again in the finals to place sixth with 288.60 points. His best dive in the final was a reverse 2.5 somersault tuck that scored 54.60 points while his forward 3.5 somersault tuck earned him 51.80 points.

Senior Curtis Roden placed eighth in the 3-meter event with 279.50 points while sophomore Matt Akers took 11th with 272.55. Roden had three dives earn at least 53 points in the final, including his back 1.5 somersault, 2.5 twist free that scored 54.60 points.

Both Viking men's relays claimed runner-up finishes.

The men's 200 medley relay squad—seniors Jason van der Touw and Jared Stergar and juniors DJ Arslanian and Dominic Poletta—took second in 1:28.24. Arslanian's third-leg split of 21.31 seconds was the fastest in the race while van der Touw's lead split of 22.58 was a career-best.

The men's 800 free relay squad—sophomore Dominik Niedzialek, van der Touw, senior Sean Mulvin and junior Erwan Mahoudo—touched second in 6:35.05. Niedzialek's opening 200 free split of 1:38.59 was a career-best.

The women's 200 medley relay team bettered their seed by a spot to take second in the very first event of the championship. Senior Cassandra Oltman, sophomore Alana Cartwright, senior Molly McNamara and junior Madi Jaszcz were runners-up in 1:41.17. Oltman's lead split of 25.33 seconds bettered her career best set at last year's league meet.

The CSU women took third in a very close 800 free relay in which they only finished .45 seconds out of first place. Sophomore Irena Weclawiak, junior Gabriella Marinelli and seniors Molly McNamara and Claudia Zido took bronze in 7:24.78. McNamara put in a split of 1:49.63 despite rarely swimming the event.

The Championships will continue Thursday with three individual swimming events and the 200 freestyle relay for each gender along with women's 1-meter diving.
