INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened the 2019 calendar year Friday evening by competing against Horizon League foes IUPUI and UIC at Indiana University Natatorium.

Cleveland State was led by its divers on the men's side.

In the 1-meter event, senior Curtis Roden won with 290.40 points while sophomore Matt Akers was second with 280.50 points. The two flipped roles in the 3-meter event with Akers winning with 310.20 points while Roden was runner-up with 295.40 points.

Sophomore Dominik Niedzialek had a solid opening to the 2019 calendar year, winning an individual event and placing second in another. He won the 100 backstroke in 51.06 seconds and was the runner-up in the 1000 freestyle in 9:38.17.

Niedzialek also swam the lead leg of CSU's runner-up 200 medley relay. Senior Jared Stergar and juniors Matthew Martin and Dominic Poletta followed to complete the race in 1:33.76.

Martin won the 100 butterfly in 49.86 seconds, out-touching an opponent from UIC.

Poletta was CSU's top finisher in the 50 freestyle, taking fourth in 21.51 seconds. He led CSU's top 400 freestyle relay that was followed by senior Jason van der Touw and juniors Erwan Mahoudo and Jack MacDonald. The quartet took third in 3:11.17.

Van der Touw was CSU's top placer in both the 200 free and 500 free, placing third (1:42.77) and fifth (4:46.15), respectively. Mahoudo was fourth in the 200 free in 1:44.14.

Freshman Jack Krusinski and junior Tyler Stevenson were third (58.90 seconds) and fourth (59.55), respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.

Sophomore Timothy Kubacki took third in the 400 IM (4:07.01) while junior DJ Arslanian was the Vikings' top finisher in the 100 free, taking fifth in 47.46 seconds.

Senior Molly McNamara won both of the individual events she contested Friday. She placed first in the 400 IM in 4:31.66 and touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly in 56.07 seconds.

McNamara swam the third leg of CSU's runner-up 200 medley relay team. Senior Cassandra Oltman led off, sophomore Alana Cartwright swam second and junior Madi Jaszcz swam the anchor as the group finished in 1:47.39.

Cartwright was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.44 while classmate Libby Smith was third in 1:07.81.

Freshman Riley Drummond joined Cartwright in claiming a second-place finish as she was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke in 58.34 seconds.

Sophomore Irena Weclawiak was CSU's top finisher in both the 200 and 500 freestyle. She was fourth in both races, finishing the 200 in 1:55.43 and completing the 500 in 5:16.40.

Wecalwiak led off CSU's top 400 free relay and was followed by junior Gabriella Marinelli, sophomroe Maggie Hogsed and Drummond. The group finished in 3:39.81.

Freshman Agnes Bahr was fourth in the 1000 freestyle in 10:56.17 while Marinelli was CSU's top finisher in the 100 freestyle, taking sixth in 54.47 seconds.

Sophomore Erica Henrichsen was fourth in 3-meter diving (219.15) and fifth in the 1-meter event (212.00).

Cleveland State will compete in a second tri-dual Saturday against the same two schools with a slightly different event schedule.
