CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sophomore Dominik Niedzialek won the 100 backstroke while the Viking women moved up the leaderboard as the Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams hosted the second day of the seventh annual Magnus Cup Saturday inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

The CSU men widened their lead to a considerable margin Saturday. They now have 1,263.5 points and have more than 400 points clear of the runner-up squad. The Viking women edged up a spot into fifth place among the 16 women's teams as CSU owns 420.5 points.

Niedzialek rallied from a deficit at the halfway point to claim victory in the 100 back in 49.01 seconds. Sophomore Timothy Kubacki took eighth (50.92), junior Ryan Johnston was ninth in a new personal best (51.79) and junior Matthew Martin was 11th (51.15).

Freshman Jack Krusinski had a pair of top-five individual finishes Saturday.

He took bronze in the 100 breaststroke in a very tight race. His time of 56.10 seconds was only .04 seconds behind the winner and also represented a new career best. Senior Jared Stergar tied for fifth (56.39) while classmate Addison Kaufmann tied for 11th (56.89).

Krusinski was also CSU's top finisher in the 400 IM where he also set a new personal best. He finished fifth in 4:04.22 and was right ahead of Kubacki in sixth (4:06.65) and senior MacJilton Lewis in seventh (4:07.69). Sophomore Alec Bowie rounded out the top 10 in the race, finishing in 4:09.31.

Junior DJ Arslanian had a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly, stopping the clock in 48.87 seconds. Martin was fourth (49.13) while freshman Bob Lenart and junior Dominic Poletta were 11th and 12th, respectively (49.92, 50.16).

Senior Jason van der Touw led a trio of Vikings in the top 10 in the 200 free. He took fifth (1:40.05) while junior Erwan Mahoudo was right behind in sixth (1:41.24). Junior Spencer Tretter finished 10th (1:43.92).

Sophomore Matt Akers swept the diving events by winning the 1-meter event with 282.05 points. Senior Curtis Roden was the runner-up with 272.50 points.

Van der Touw, Stergar, Martin and Poletta combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:29.99. Niedzialek, Tretter, van der Touw and Mahoudo took runner-up honors in the 800 freestyle relay in 6:48.16.

The CSU women combined for 10 top-15 individual on the day and had two teams finish among the top six in the 200 medley relay.

Sophomore Alana Cartwright and junior Madisyn Jaszcz both had two top-20 finishes Saturday.

Cartwright finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.09. Sophomore Libby Smith was 18th in the same event in 1:05.90.

Cartwright was also the top Viking finisher in the 100 butterfly, finishing 17th in 56.57 seconds, after she had tied her career-best time in the prelims (55.89). Jaszcz was not far behind, tying for 19th in the field of 126 swimmers in 56.84 seconds. Jaszcz had posted a new career-best in prelims of 56.43 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of her prior career best.

Freshman Agnes Bahr and senior Molly McNamara both smashed personal bests in the 400 IM and rewrote the top half of the program's top-10 list.

The rookie finished eighth in 4:29.72, but her prelims swim that stopped the clock in 4:26.88 made her the fourth-fastest performer in program history. She topped her prior personal best entering the day by over seven seconds. McNamara took 12th in 4:25.73, dropping over five seconds from her prelims swim. She became the second-fastest performer in program history and beat her previous personal best entering the day by over six seconds.

Freshman Riley Drummond joined Bahr in being a rookie who was the top Viking finisher in an event. She took fourth in the 100 backstroke in a field of 101 swimmers in 56.35 seconds, becoming the fifth-fastest performer in program history. Senior Cassandra Oltman took seventh (56.98), Jaszcz was 13th (57.27) and junior Chuchu Yang tied for 14th in a career-best time (57.63).

Senior Claudia Zido and sophomore Irena Weclawiak finished 12th and 14th, respectively, in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.28 and 1:52.37. Junior Gabriella Marinelli (1:52.60) and sophomore Maggie Hogsed (1:54.32) were also among the top 30 in the field of 98, the latter in a new career best.

Sophomore Erica Henrichsen took eighth in 3-meter diving with a season-high 228.70 points.

Oltman, Cartwright, McNamara and Zido finished the 200 medley relay in 1:42.80 to take fourth. CSU's 'B' team of Drummond, sophomore Gracyn McQueary, Jaszcz and Marinelli was not far behind as they took sixth in 1:44.17.

Weclawiak, Marinelli, Hogsed and Zido finished seventh in the 800 free relay in 7:33.90.

The meet concludes Sunday with eight more individual swimming events and the 400 free relays for both genders.
