Akers Named HL Men’s Diver of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Sophomore Matt Akers of the Cleveland State University men's swimming & diving team was named the Nike Horizon League Men's Diver of the Week as announced by the League office Tuesday afternoon.

It is the first honor of the season for Akers and the third such honor of his career.

Akers surpassed NCAA qualifying standards in both events he contested while competing for the first time this season this past weekend.

Akers finished with the highest scores in both diving events, helping CSU win every event contested as the Vikings cruised to a dual win over Xavier. He began his day by posting 324.35 points on the 3-meter board and wrapped it up with 315.40 points in the 1-meter event, both of which marked new career highs.

Akers scored over 54 points on four of his six 3-meter dives, including an event-high 59.40 points on his inward 2.5 somersault tuck.

Akers posted a score of over 50 points on four of his six 1-meter dives, including tallying 61.50 points on a forward 3.5 somersault tuck.

Cleveland State will be back in action this Saturday, Nov. 3, for a dual at Miami (Ohio).
