CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's swimming & diving team won all 16 events contested in its season-opening dual with Xavier to claim a 191-90 victory over the Musketeers Saturday afternoon inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

The CSU women split its dual with Xavier right down the middle as the teams tied, 144-144.

Sophomore Matt Akers and senior Curtis Roden both surpassed NCAA qualifying standards in their season debuts on the diving boards. Akers had the top score in both 3-meter (324.35) and 1-meter (315.40) with both efforts reaching NCAA marks as both also represented new career highs. Roden surpassed the NCAA standard in the 1-meter (305.10) with a new career best and also had a strong showing on the 3-meter board (307.45).

Five CSU men's swimmers joined Akers in winning multiple events.

Junior Jason van der Touw won the 200 freestyle (1:41.72) and the 100 freestyle (46.66 seconds) and also swam the lead leg on CSU's winning 200 medley relay. He was joined by freshman Jack Krusinski and juniors Matthew Martin and Dominic Poletta as the quartet won in 1:31.90.

Junior Erwan Mahoudo was runner-up in the 200 free (1:43.91) while senior Sean Mulvin had the second-fastest time in the 100 free (47.01).

Krusinski and Martin joined Van der Touw in winning two individual events and swimming on the winning medley relay.

Krusinski swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 57.38 seconds and finishing first in the 200 in 2:04.42. Senior Jared Stergar was the runner-up in the 100 (58.22). Stergar and Krusinski flipped roles in the 100 IM. Stergar won in 52.90 seconds while Krusinski had the second-fastest time (53.08).

Martin swept the butterfly events, winning the 200 by over four seconds in 1:52.11. He went on to win the 100 in 50.43 seconds. Junior DJ Arslanian had the second-fastest times in both events (1:56.73, 51.21).

Sophomores Timothy Kubacki and Dominik Niedzialek also each won two individual events.

Kubacki won the 100 backstroke in 51.29 seconds before coming back to win the 500 freestyle in 4:44.69. Mahoudo had the second-fastest time in the 500 free (4:47.04).

Niedzialek had a similar outing as Kubacki by winning a distance freestyle event and a backstroke event. He claimed the 1000 freestyle in 9:35.75 and came back to touch the wall first in the 200 backstroke (1:52.06).

Poletta led a CSU charge in the 50 freestyle that saw the Vikings take the top five spots in the event. He won in 20.77 seconds while sophomore Ryan Sedlak was the runner-up in 21.21.

Poletta, Arslanian, Sedlak and junior Jack MacDonald won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:23.05 to close the meet.

Sophomore Alana Cartwright led the CSU women by winning two individual events and swimming on a winning relay.

She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.64, just edging out her classmates, Libby Smith (1:06.72) and Gracyn McQueary (1:06.85), who finished in second and third place.

Cartwright also won the 100 IM in 59.23 seconds while freshman Riley Drummond was second in 1:00.16.

Drummond, McQueary, Cartwright and junior Madisyn Jaszcz won the 200 medley relay in 1:46.41.

Smith helped CSU sweep the breaststroke events, winning the 200 in 2:25.55. McQueary was third in 2:28.44.

Drummond was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke in 57.79 seconds. She took third in the 200 (2:08.41), sandwiched between teammates Chuchu Yang (2:08.10) and Michaela Bargardi (2:09.22).

Sophomore Lexie Kostelnik won the 1000 freestyle in 10:39.04 and was the runner-up in the 500 in 5:12.23.

Senior Claudia Zido took second place in both the 200 freestyle (1:55.39) and 100 freestyle (53.26). Junior Gabriella Marinelli followed behind her in both events, taking third in the 200 (1:55.67) and fourth in the 100 (53.66). Marinelli was also CSU's top finisher in the 50 free, taking fourth in 24.99 seconds.

Marinelli, Zido, sophomore Irena Weclawiak and McQueary took second in the 200 free relay in 1:38.55.

Cartwright (59.43) and freshman Stephanie Sipple (2:14.34) were CSU's top finishers in the 100 and 200 butterfly, respectively, with both finishing in third place.

Both Cleveland State programs will continue dual action next weekend as they visit Miami (Ohio) Saturday, Nov. 3.
