Cleveland State Men's Soccer Drops Horizon League Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings (1-3-1, 0-1-0) opened Horizon League play with a 3-0 loss to Oakland (1-3-1, 1-0-0) on Saturday evening.

Cleveland State had a golden opportunity to get on the board in the second minute as Oakland was called for a handball in the box, but Albert Portas' penalty kick was saved.

In the ninth minute, Portas ripped a shot that was saved, and Pablo Kawecki's follow-up was cleared off the line by a defender.

Oakland accounted for the first goal on their first shot in the 17th minute as Owen Smith scored on a free kick from the top of the box. Six minutes later, Mikey Ketteman finished off a cross from Jace Foster to make it 2-0.

The Golden Grizzlies upped the margin to 3-0 in the 31st minute behind Ketteman's second goal of the game off a flick-through from Owen Smith.

The Green and White went into the intermission trailing 3-0 despite holding a 9-3 edge in shots.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second half as Cleveland State held a 12-6 advantage in shots but fell in the game, 3-0.

The shot total favored the home team, 21-9, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Kawecki fired off six shots with three on frame. Julian Pellegrini finished with four shots.

Stephen Yerian made his second straight start in goal, finishing with three saves.

The Green and White head to No. 2 Marshall on Tuesday, September 12 for a 7:15 p.m. kickoff.
