Cleveland State Men's Soccer Claims 2022 Horizon League Tournament Championship

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The top-seeded Cleveland State men's soccer team won their second Horizon League Tournament Championship after shutting out third-seeded IUPUI 3-0 on Saturday at Krenzler Field.

The Vikings earned the Horizon League's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with the victory and moved to 11-3-5 overall.

THE GAME
Cleveland State tallied the lone goal of the opening half in the 27th minute when Albert Portas sailed a shot over the keeper from a nearly impossible angle to lead 1-0.

The Vikings took that advantage into the halftime break, outshooting the Jaguars 9-3 in the half.

Jannis Schmidt doubled the margin in the 56th minute as the senior chipped the keeper from the top of the box off a backward pass from Bojan Kolevski. Pablo Kawecki sealed the championship in the 72nd minute, finishing off a through ball from Kolevski.

The Green and White held a 21-6 advantage in shots, holding IUPUI to three shots in each half. Cleveland State took seven corners compared to one for the Jaguars.

Portas led the game with six shots while Schmidt and Kawecki had five apiece. Omeed Naeemy made three saves in the game.

Cleveland State will make its tenth appearance in the national tournament with their previous trip coming in 2012.

The 2022 men's soccer selection show, which will reveal the tournament bracket, will air live on NCAA.com at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14.
