Cleveland State Men's Soccer Uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Cleveland State (7-1-2, 3-0-1) scored three second-half goals to come from behind to defeat Purdue Fort Wayne (1-6-3, 0-2-2) 3-2 on Saturday evening. The Vikings are off to their fourth-best start in program history through ten games.

THE GAME
Purdue Fort Wayne netted the opening goal in the 12th minute as Luke Benford slotted the ball home from the top of the box. The Mastodons extended their lead in the 41st minute as Logan Lee headed in a cross by Abe Arellano.

The Vikings went into the intermission trailing 2-0, taking just a single shot in the first half.

Cleveland State broke through in the 49th minute when Pablo Kawecki finished off a through ball from Hector Gomez to trail 2-1. Bojan Kolevski evened the game in the 56th minute off perfect one-touch passing from Nick McCausland and Kawecki.

Kawecki then put the Green and White on top 3-2 in the 79th minute with a blast from the top of the box for his second of the game. The Vikings went on to hold off the home team for their seventh victory of the season.

Cleveland State outshot Purdue Fort Wayne 8-6 and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Kolevski paced the game with three shots. Kawecki finished with two goals and one assist. Omeed Naeemy picked up the win in goal after making one save.

UP NEXT
Cleveland State will enjoy a week off before getting back on Krenzler Field on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. against Oakland in a rematch of the 2021 Horizon League Championship game. The contest will also be Alumni Day for the Vikings.
