Schmidt Scores Game-Winner in Overtime as Cleveland State Men's Soccer is off to Best Start in Horizon League Play

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Jannis Schmidt scored the game-winner in the 94th minute, propelling the Vikings to their best start in Horizon League play, 5-0-0. Today's 2-1 victory in overtime came as Cleveland State celebrated Alumni Day on Krenzler Field

THE GAME
Cleveland State and Purdue Fort Wayne played to a scoreless first half with the visitors holding a 6-3 edge in shots. The Mastodons nearly scored in the 27th minute when Moses Akimana's shot from the top of the box went off the left post.

Purdue Fort Wayne struck just two minutes into the new half as Luke Benford scored off a through ball from Nathaniel Edwards. With time not on their side, Bojan Kolevski equalized in the 86th minute on a scramble in the box, following a cross from Albert Portas.

Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week, Schmidt won the game for the Green and White in the 94th minute, scoring off a through ball from Kolevski.

Cleveland State outshot Purdue Fort Wayne 13-10 in the contest and had the lone shot in the overtime period. Omeed Naeemy made four saves in goal for the victory. Kolevski paced the Vikings with five shots on the afternoon.

UP NEXT
Cleveland State will hit the road for three straight games, starting with No. 16 Pittsburgh on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Vikings will then move back into league play for the next two games.
