Cleveland State Men's Soccer Blanks Detroit Mercy, 2-0

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings recorded their first shutout of the year on Saturday evening, blanking Detroit Mercy, 2-0 on Krenzler Field. With the victory, Cleveland State has now won three straight while improving to 2-0 in Horizon League play.

THE GAME
The opening half went scoreless with Detroit Mercy holding an 8-3 edge in shots. Each team had two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.

Cleveland State snagged the first goal of the contest in the 58th minute when Albert Portas rocketed a shot from 25-yards out into the upper right corner off a pass from Pablo Kawecki.

Kawecki doubled the advantage in the 83rd minute, finishing off a through ball from Michael Neumann. The Vikings defense saw the game off as the Green and White came away with the 2-0 shutout.

Omeed Naeemy made eight saves for his first clean sheet of the campaign.

Jannis Schmidt, Julian Pellegrini, and Portas finished with two shots apiece.

UP NEXT
Cleveland State heads to Ohio State University on Tuesday, Sept. 21 for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Vikings lead the all-time series with the Buckeyes, 16-12-1.
