Cleveland State Men's Soccer Uses Big Second Half to Claim Horizon League Opener

GREEN BAY, Wisc. – Cleveland State University opened Horizon League play with a 4-1 victory over Green Bay on Saturday evening. The Vikings grabbed control of the game, scoring three goals in a five-minute span during the second half as Bojan Kolevski finished with his first career hat-trick.

THE GAME
The opening half of the league opener went scoreless as Green Bay held a 5-2 advantage in shots.

The Phoenix nearly had the first goal of the game in the 62nd minute when Ruben Lindsen's shot went off the crossbar. Three minutes later, Kolevski put the Vikings in front with his second goal of the year off a pass from Josh Davis.

Jannis Schmidt doubled the margin in the 68th minute off a feed from Kolevski. Kolevski then made it 3-0 in the 70th minute with his second goal of the game off an assist from Schmidt.

Green Bay ended the shutout in the 75th minute when Cleveland State was called for a foul in the box. Eysteinn Bjorgvinsson converted from the penalty spot, making it 3-1 in favor of the Vikings.

Kolevski completed the hat-trick in the 78th minute off a double assist from Pablo Kawecki and Schmidt as Cleveland State led 4-1.

The Phoenix had their second penalty kick in the 79th minute but this time Omeed Naeemy came up with the save against Bjorgvinsson.

Cleveland State saw the game off, winning the Horizon League opener, 4-1. With the victory, the Green and White are 2-1 in their first league game of the year under head coach Sinisa Ubiparipovic.

Schmidt has now recorded multiple assists in consecutive contests. Kolevski paced the offense with a game-best five shots with three of those on target. Naeemy finished the night with six saves.

UP NEXT
The Vikings remain in league play on Saturday Sept. 18 when Detroit Mercy visits Krenzler Field for a 7 p.m. contest.
