Opening Whistle
The Vikings men's soccer team will play their first game on Krenzler Field tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. against Bowling Green University. Cleveland State is 1-0-1 under head coach Sinisa Ubiparipovic in home debuts.
Falcon Facts
Bowling Green is off to a 1-0-1 start, tying IUPUI in their opener, 0-0, before defeating Gonzaga on the road in overtime, 2-1. BGSU was picked to win the MAC regular season and received votes in the United Soccer Coaches preseason rankings.
The Falcons returned 15 players from last year's team that appeared in the NCAA tournament. Logan Kowalczyk has started both games in goal, recording five saves to go along with his shutout. Nathan Masters and Alberto Anaya account for the two goals on the year.
The Series
Bowling Green leads the all-time series, 18-16-1, with the Falcons capturing five of the last six contests. In the most recent meeting, the Falcons won 1-0 on their home field in 2019. Cleveland State won the last meeting on Krenzler Field 2-0 on Sept. 18, 2018.
Last Game Out
Cleveland State dropped their season opener on Thursday, Aug. 26 at Michigan State by a final score of 2-1. Jannis Schmidt scored the lone goal off an assist from Julian Pellegrini. Omeed Naeemy made four saves in the game.
All-Horizon Returners
Cleveland State returns four All-Horizon League Second Team honorees: Bojan Kolevski, Jannis Schmidt, Thomas M'Barek, and Saahb Kular.
- Kolevski started all eight games that he played in, tallying four goals and an assist.
- Schmidt started all nine games, leading the Vikings in points (15) and goals (6). He was also tied for the team lead in assists (3) and game-winners (2). In addition, his two game-winners were tied for most in Horizon League play while his six goals were third-most in the league.
- M'Barek earned his third All-Horizon honor after starting eight games on defense. M'Barek anchored the Vikings backline to four shutouts.
- Kular started all nine games for the Vikings on the backline. He also helped the defense to four shutouts, allowing just 10 goals on the year, third lowest in the Horizon League. Kular added two assists on the year.
Preseason Poll
The Vikings were picked to finish sixth in the Horizon League Men's Soccer Preseason Poll. The Green and White received 71 votes, with Oakland picked atop the poll with 113 votes.
Coming Up
Cleveland State remains at home on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. against St. Bonaventure before starting Horizon League play at Green Bay on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m.
