INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - Cleveland State's Jannis Schmidt has been named this week's Nike #HLMSOC Offensive Player of the Week, the Horizon League announced Friday afternoon.
Schmidt joins redshirt sophomore Saahb Kular as one of two Vikings to receive the League's weekly award as Kular was named Defensive Player of the Week last week after playing a pivotal role in helping the Vikings keep a clean sheet as they picked up their first victory of the campaign against Robert Morris on Wednesday, Feb. 10.
In Cleveland State's 3-0 win over Detroit Mercy on Tuesday, Feb. 16, Schmidt logged a pair of goals and recorded three shots, including two on frame, while setting a new career-high with three tallies over the first three matches of the campaign. The Gensingen, Germany, native posted his first goal on a first-half penalty shot before firing a rocket from outside the 18 into the top left corner in the 61st minute for his second marker.
The win marked Cleveland State's first win over Detroit Mercy since the 2016 season.
Overall, Schmidt has scored three of the Vikings' last four goals and paces Cleveland State in scoring with seven points (3-1-7).
The junior forward's heroics boosted Cleveland State (2-1-0) above .500 in Horizon League play ahead of next Monday's intrastate road tilt at Wright State.
