Cleveland State Grabs First Win on Road

CANONSBURG, Pa. – The Cleveland State University men's soccer team used a pair of second-half strikes to claim a 2-0 win at Robert Morris in Horizon League action Wednesday afternoon inside SouthPointe Fieldhouse.

After dropping its season opener last week in double overtime, CSU bounced back with a convincing road victory.

Junior Jannis Schmidt assisted on CSU's first goal before scoring the second one himself. True freshman Bojan Kolevski tallied his first-career goal while sophomore Omeed Naeemy picked up his first shutout of the season.

Head coach Sinisa Ubiparipovic made two changes to the starting XI from last week's opener at Green Bay, having junior Ivan Babic and freshman Josh Davis in from the opening whistle. It was the first start since 2018 for Babic while Davis was making the first of his collegiate career.

Cleveland State opened on the front foot, taking six of the first seven shots of the match in the opening 20 minutes. Sophomore Pablo Kawecki took a trio in this opening sequence while redshirt junior Andrew Nicholas had a pair of efforts saved.

Robert Morris took three of its five shots in the opening half within a three-minute stretch a little past the half hour mark. Two of the three efforts were blocked by the Viking defense while Naeemy managed to snare the other one.

CSU took each of the final three shots of the half, in the final six minutes of play, but each effort was wide of the mark.

The Vikings turned up the pressure in the second half as CSU would proceed to take each of the first 11 shots of the second stanza.

The pressure paid off in the 64th minute. Kolevski opened his collegiate account with a strike from outside the box that nestled in the upper left corner.

Just over five minutes later, Schmidt, who set up the first goal, would add an insurance tally to double the Viking lead.

Cleveland State did not allow a single shot over the opening 36 minutes of the second half and was able to hang on for the win without too much trouble.

True freshman Parker Csiszar came in late in the second half to make his collegiate debut, making him the fifth Viking rookie to see action thus far this season.

CSU had a 20-8 advantage in shot attempts in the match.

Schmidt's goal was the third of his career while his assist was his fifth as a Viking. Naeemy grabbed his fifth shutout of his career with his clean sheet.

Cleveland State will return home Tuesday, Feb. 16, as it welcomes Detroit Mercy.
