Vikings Announce Addition of Michael Kelly

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State University head men's soccer coach Sinisa Ubiparipovic announced Wednesday afternoon that Michael Kelly has formally committed to join the program for the 2020-21 academic year.

Kelly is a defender that hails from Medina, Ohio. He has competed for Medina High School as well as both Pennine United and Upper 90 on the club circuit. He primarily plays as an outside back and can slide up into an outside midfielder role if necessary.

"During his high school career, Michael was an integral part of one of the most successful high school programs in the country," Ubiparipovic said. "He is a very dynamic and speedy defender with an ability to join in the attack."

Kelly captained the Bees in his senior campaign, leading the squad to the Greater Cleveland Conference title and its fourth straight state final four appearance. He earned the first of two All-Greater Cleveland Conference honors in 2018 while helping Medina to its first state championship in program history. Also an all-county and all-district honoree, Kelly earned Medina's Unsung Hero Award as a sophomore after helping the Bees to a berth in the state championship match.

On the club circuit, Kelly helped his squad become National League Participants in both 2017 and 2018. He also won a Region II championship in 2017 and was a runner-up in the state cup.

Kelly's success on the pitch at Medina has gone hand in hand with success on the track. He is a two-time All-Ohio honoree in track & field and was named the Medina County MVP in the sport as a junior. He holds the school record in the 400 meters and was also a part of 4x400 and sprint medley relays that hold Medina records. Kelly is also a two-time All-Greater Cleveland Conference honoree in track.

Kelly has also achieved at a high level in his academic career to date. He earned Honor Roll and Merit Roll accolades at Medina as well as the high school's Staff Choice Award.

Kelly is the second Medina High School commitment of this class, joining Parker Csiszar, who signed with CSU in November 2019.

Ubiparipovic completed his first season as head coach at CSU this past fall and led the Vikings to notable results against nationally ranked Louisville, Ohio State and Akron. The Vikings led the Horizon League in fewest goals allowed, yielding only 17 in 15 matches.
