Making its longest trip of the season, the Cleveland State University men's soccer team came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision Saturday night at a wet and sloppy Aldo Santaga Stadium.

Villi Kaldal scored the lone goal of the match in the 73rd minute as the Phoenix became the first, and only, side to overcome the wind-driven rain to find the net.

The Vikings used the same starting XI for the third time running, but unlike the previous two occasions, they were unable to capture three points.

Cleveland State created the majority of opportunities in the first half but was unable to claim a lead because of it.

One of CSU's better chances came in the 24th minute when senior Lawrence Karpeh spun his defender before sending a cross in from near the end line on the left flank. Classmate Vlad Jandric lunged forward to get his head to it, but the Phoenix goalkeeper was able to make a diving stop, directing the ball out of play.

Fewer than 10 minutes later, senior Thomas Bielanski sent a nicely driven ball into the box off a free kick. Classmate Gabriel Pewu had created space from a defender, but the ball just eluded his leaping header attempt.

Green Bay's best chance in the first half came off a 37th minute set piece, but the shot taken from outside the box was too high.

The Phoenix would score the only goal of the match in the 73rd minute when Villi Kaldal ran onto a bouncing through ball played from near midfield. He hit a shot first time at an angle from the goalkeeper's left and was able to direct the shot inside the near post.

CSU had a few quality chances earlier in the half. In the 58th minute, Pewu had the ball in the left side of the box, but his effort toward goal was palmed away before Karpeh sent a shot wide after gathering the rebound. Not long before Green Bay scored, the Vikings had a free kick taken only a few yards outside the box but were unable to direct it on target.

The Vikings earned a corner kick in the final two minutes but were unable to produce a shot from the sequence.

Nevertheless, Cleveland State held a 13-9 advantage in shots and also had a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. Green Bay committed 15 fouls to just nine for CSU while the hosts were shown four yellow cards while the guests saw only one.

Cleveland State will continue its three game road swing by heading to Cincinnati Wednesday, Oct. 9.
